Chevrolet Malibu Baltimore

Not all sedans are created equal, and for proof of this, all you need to do is look at the new Chevrolet Malibu. The mid-size sedan has been in production since 1964, and despite a pause in model years from 1983 to 1997, the Malibu is still going strong today.

So just what makes the Malibu different from other similar mid-size sedans? Let’s take a look at ninth generation of the Malibu for the reasons why a Chevrolet Malibu Baltimore purchase is a wise one for any driver:

Inside the Ninth Generation Malibu

The Chevy Malibu’s ninth generation began with the 2016 year model. It offered a complete redesign from the previous eighth generation vehicle, evidenced by a sleeker-looking exterior. Here are some of the highlights of the ninth generation Malibu:

  • Wider, but more fuel efficient: While the profile of the Malibu is sleeker, the vehicle is actually wider by about 4 inches. This translates to more interior space. Despite this extension of the wheelbase, the Malibu is actually about 300 pounds lighter than previous generation models, which thereby permits better overall fuel economy. Standard fuel economy is rated at 27 mpg city and up to 34 mpg on the highway.
  • Turbo or hybrid: Under the hood, the Malibu comes standard with a 1.5 liter Ecotec engine. Drivers can upgrade to a 2 liter turbocharged engine or opt for the 1.8 liter hybrid. Depending on the engine type, the vehicle can achieve horsepower ranging from 160 to 250. Offered transmissions include a 6- or 9-speed automatic.
  • Sporty, yet luxurious: We already talked a bit about how the current Malibu’s ninth generation featured a complete redesign from the previous. And aerodynamic sculpting, a signature grill, accents, optional daytime LED run lights and more help it achieve a luxurious, sophisticated look. But with a turbocharged engine and responsive transmission, it still allows drivers a sporty feel from behind the wheel.
  • Teen driver feature: A first of its kind, the 2016 Malibu – the first model in the ninth generation – featured a “Teen Driver” option, where adults could view their teen’s driving statistics when the kids borrowed the car to make sure that they’re obeying speed limit laws and more. This feature continues today in the more recent models.
  • Safe and smart: In addition to the teen driver feature, other safety features include low speed automatic braking, lane change alert, blind zone alert, a rear camera and rear cross traffic alert, among others. Optional features include park assist and pedestrian braking.
